The design of the BMP-3 or Obyekt 688M can be traced back to the Obyekt 685 light tank prototype with 100 mm gun 2A48-1 from 1975.[1]
This vehicle did not enter series production but the chassis, with a new engine, was used for the next-generation infantry combat vehicle Obyekt 688[2] from A. Blagonravov's design bureau. The Ob. 688 weapons configuration—an externally-mounted 30 mm gun and twin Konkurs ATGM launcher—was rejected;
instead the new 2K23 armament system was selected. The resulting BMP-3 was developed in the early 1980s and entered service with the Soviet army officially in 1987. It was shown for the first time in public during the 1990 May Day parade and was given the NATO code IFV M1990/1.

Ammunition load is 500 AP (Armour-Piercing) or HE-FRAG rounds. Rate of fire is more than 300 rounds a minute and range is 1,500m to 2,000m. There is also one 7.62mm PKT coaxial machine gun and two 7.62 bow machine guns.
Bmp- Infantry Combat Vehicle
The fire control system is automatic with manual override for both gunner and commander. It includes a 1V539 ballistic computer, 2E52 electro-mechanical armament stabilizer and 1D16 laser rangefinder. The gunner has a 1K13-2 main sight, a combined image-intensified day / night sight and PPD-1 standby day sight.
The commander has a 1PZ-10 day sight and TKN-3 combined day and image-intensified night sight. According to the manufacturer's web-site, all weapons can be fired from the halt, on the move, and afloat with the same effectiveness.
The ability to hit targets on the move with missiles was successfully demonstrated during competitive evaluations in the UAE in 1991.[6] The BMP now has the same efficiency both day and night. In addition, on the Berezhok combat module, in addition to the standard 30-mm cannon and the PKT machine gun coaxial with it, there are four and anti-tank guided missiles.
Moreover, the operator of the complex does not need to pull out ATGMs from the fighting compartment, mount it on the tower and shoot, exposing himself to return fire. The missile is controlled from the fighting compartment.
Upgraded Bmp-M Vehicle
BTR-50Ps saw combat in Cold War-era conflicts including the Six Day War, the Angolan civil war, the Iran-Iraq war, and in Vietnam during a failed night attack on an American base at Ben Het defended by M48 Patton tanks.
Later, Hanois fielded BTR-50s up-gunned with 23-millimeter cannons in offensives targeting South Vietnam and the Khmer Rouge in Cambodia. However, the most dramatic use of the BTR-50's capabilities occurred at the onset of the Yom Kippur War on October 6, 1973, when the Egyptian Army launched 1,000 commandoes in its 130th Amphibious Brigade across the Greater Bitter Lake on 74 BTR-50PKs and
OT-62s, escorted by 24 PT-76s, reinforced with Sagger anti-tank missile teams. The upgraded vehicles are equipped with the UTD-23 higher-power supercharged engine and a higher performance running gear (road wheels with increased load-carrying capacity, increased rigidity torsion bars, higher-performance shock absorbers, and tracks with rubber pads).
These engineering solutions have increased maneuverability, ride comfort and the average speed of the vehicle. To combat less complex targets: snipers, grenade throwers, infantry, there is a 30-mm quick-firing gun and a PKT machine gun coaxial with it.

Early models were powered by a 450 hp engine UTD-29, but most BMP-3s are equipped with the 500 hp UTD-29M version. The engine was developed at the Transmash Diesel Engine Plant in Barnaul. A stabilized platform with two ready-to-fire Ataka-T supersonic laser beam-riding ATGMs carrying HEAT or thermobaric warheads is fitted to the top of the turret roof. Guidance of ATGMs is provided by the gunner/operator using the primary sight.
The missiles can be fired both at the halt and on the move. A high flight speed of the missile reduces the time during which the gunner has to hold the laying mark on the target, whereas high armor penetration of the warhead provides assured defeat of virtually any modern tank.

Russia already uses many 13-ton tracked MT-LB multi-purpose vehicles as a substitute armored personnel carrier in second-string units, some converted to carry 23-millimeter cannons.
